"Sunnfjord Museum" - Norway - Colaboração

Water fronts from ancient times, defined places of primitive occupation and gathering, particularly when the land was surrounded by forest.

Our intent with the placement of the building on the top of the hill was t follow this vision of the lake and the steep hills. Also to provide an overview over the outdoor museum and the surrounding farmland. The movatnet agora is a place of cultural gathering for visitors and workers of a new institution.

The creation of forest trails is inserted on the old tradition of traveling in the old times and maximizes the outdoor experience of the museum visitors.

It was particularly important to maximize the existence of an idyllic 1850’s farm landscape of the outdoor museum at the lower level. The removal of the outdated and inadequate office and workshop building provides a more calm set-up for the surroundings of the farm wood buildings. From this lower level is possible through a direct route to access the new indoor museum, and cafeteria. In addition the visitors can engage in further routes into a forest route, to find other relaxing spots and places for group gathering.

Arrival by car seems to be the start of the experience. In that sense we focused on providing a well organized car park, for cars and buses. From there a glimpse of a building on top of the hill signals the existence of a museum. The trails take pedestrian visitor from there. It’s possible to acquire a ticket through an automatic machine on the bottom of the hill and start the journey.

The organization of the building was to provide the benefits of the site in terms of light, view, and quietness. This was done to maximize the well being of the visitors but specially the everyday workers. Practical solutions for the rooms related with the processing of objects and archiving was also observed to provide efficient usage. In order to build a well controlled rooms for archiving, they were placed on basement levels. This also assures adequate security to the collection. The propose structural grid allows an economical solution to build rooms for different storage needs with maximum flexibility.

Modern spaces, clean views, flexible spaces for exhibition. Adequate formal and informal spaces.

The site landscaping through a careful selection of trees different provides new spatial possibilities. In one side a mixture of tree types gives openness and variation during the all year round. Specially in winter time, maximizing receiving sun light gives both external and internal spaces important comfort. Mixture and gradation of tree types was also seen as a solution to unite the forest site with the farm. Trees are also used to filter the views from visitors to the new workshop building and service access route for trucks and tractor.
